Why alcohol calories add up fast
Pure ethanol supplies 7 kilocalories per gram, just under the 9 kilocalories per gram of fat and substantially above the 4 kilocalories per gram of protein and carbohydrate. A standard drink is defined in the United States as 14 grams of pure alcohol, in the United Kingdom as 8 grams and in most of continental Europe as 10 grams. A 150-milliliter glass of 12 percent wine, a 330-milliliter bottle of 5 percent beer and a 44-milliliter shot of 40 percent spirits all deliver around 14 grams of ethanol and roughly 100 kilocalories from alcohol alone, plus any calories from residual carbohydrate or mixers. Alcohol calories are often called empty because they deliver no protein, essential fats, fiber, vitamins or minerals, and they also partially displace nutrient-dense food. Two standard drinks per day for a year add up to about 70,000 kilocalories, or roughly 9 kilograms of stored fat if energy balance otherwise holds.
Low-risk drinking limits and health context
The World Health Organization 2023 position is that no level of alcohol consumption is safe for health, with risk for cancer beginning at the first drop. That said, most national guidelines define low-risk patterns. The UK Chief Medical Officer sets 14 units per week spread across at least three days with several alcohol-free days for both men and women. The US Dietary Guidelines recommend no more than two drinks per day for men and one for women, with a weekly cap around 14 and 7 drinks respectively. Binge drinking, typically defined as five or more drinks in two hours for men or four or more for women, carries outsized risk regardless of weekly average. Beyond calories, alcohol suppresses muscle protein synthesis, impairs sleep architecture, raises cortisol and delays recovery, all relevant for people pursuing body composition or performance goals. The safest pattern for health is the minimum you can enjoy or none at all.
